HEALTHY INITIATIVES COORDINATOR-GROUP EXERCISE
East
Under the direction of Sr. Director of Healthy Living, the Healthy Initiatives Coordinator – Group Exercise assists with development, organization and implementation of high quality healthy living programs and staff skill enhancements to support and encourage healthier children and families in our community. These services will be in accordance with the YMCA mission, strategic plan, goals and all policies and procedures of the YMCA of Dane County, Inc. and the YUSA Best Practices.
POSITIONS SUPERVISED:
Group Exercise, Mind Body, Dance staff
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists with management, direction and coordination of high quality and safe community integrated health, chronic disease prevention group exercise and fee based dance programs for assigned location(s).
- Assists with program expansion with a focus on community needs in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
- Support relationships with public health organizations, physicians, and payer communities along with other referral networks to enhance awareness of and referrals to community integrated health and chronic disease prevention programs.
- Assist in recruiting of, trains, provide guidance to, develop, coaches and schedules group exercise and fee based dance instructors and volunteers in branch and outreach as needed ensuring all classes are covered. Develops strategies to motivate employees and achieve goals.
- Actively involved in health initiatives.
- Builds positive relationships with and among staff, volunteers and/or members and creates a supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new staff, volunteers and/or members and connects members/volunteers/staff to the YMCA’s cause.
- Assist with the annual budgeting process; specifically, budget(s) for group exercise, fee based dance programming for approval by supervisor. Ensures assigned programs operate within budget and follows budgeting policies and procedures.
- Assist in regular in-service meetings to enhance department communication and team building. Other supervisory duties include: planning, assigning, and directing work; reviewing and approving timecards; appraising performance;rewarding and disciplining employees; monitoring and updating all required staff certifications.
- Coordinate program registration process, ensuring effective on-line and in-house registration systems. Help to analyze registration statistics to achieve optimal participation.
- Ensures safe and effective use of facility/program space. Provides for upkeep of assigned program facilities and equipment and ensures the physical environment supports healthy living.
- Supports, participates and promotes employee, volunteer and member engagement in the Annual Support Campaign and other fundraising activities. Provides staff leadership for annual fund raising campaign and committees as assigned
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of healthy living program information.
- Remains well versed in Y programs, policies and emergency procedures.
- Actively participates and/or serves in a leadership role for identified Association and Branch activities and special events.
- Follows all policies and procedures as set forth in the YMCA of Dane County Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
3. Nationally accredited Group Exercise certification recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or Foundations of Group Exercise at the Y certification required upon hire.
4. Requires knowledge of fitness program development, conditioning principles, and exercise physiology.
5. Proven experience participating in cross-functional work teams as either a project leader or project team member.
6. At least one year related experience in program administration preferred.
7. Must demonstrate initiative, strong leadership and communication skills, and have ability and experience providing guidance to staff and volunteers with a variety of educational and experiential backgrounds.
8. Must possess reliable transportation for travel when required.
9. Must possess and maintain within the indicated timeframe:
a. CPR/AED and First Aid training within 30 days of start date.
b. YOrientation, Child Abuse Prevention, and Blood Borne Pathogen, Foundations of Listen First, Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, Principles of Member Health & Wellness, and Group Exercise at the Y within 90 days of start date.

PERSONAL TRAINER
Northeast / West
Under the supervision of the Health & Well Being Director, the Personal Trainer will prescribe safe, quality exercise and strength training activities with an emphasis on client development and retention. This will be done in accordance with the mission, and general operating policies and procedures of the YMCA of Dane County, Inc.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prescribes safe exercise and strength training plans based on member’s goals, experience and abilities; and provides quality instruction in one-on-one and small group settings.
- Develops and retains a strong client base of members who desire personal training as part of their wellness journey.
- Builds relationships with health seekers, staff and volunteers of all ages; focusing on engaging members as whole persons and providing a personalized member experience in a supportive, uplifting environment.
- Knows and understands Health & Well-Being programs, department policies, and emergency procedures; and is able to clearly explain said information to members.
- Keeps certifications current, attends in house trainings and meetings, and seeks out relevant trainings to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Arrives on time for scheduled shifts and appointments with a positive attitude.
- Works assigned shifts; notifies supervisor and any affected clients in advance if unable to work. All time off must be approved in advance by supervisor.
- Remains current on information in the Lifestyle Center Manual.
- Anticipates unsafe circumstances, acts accordingly to prevent accidents, and reports all safety concerns according to procedure.
- Stays current on industry trends.
- Communicates clearly and professionally with supervisor, co-workers and members as needed.
- Supports and participates in the Community Support Campaign; and promotes member participation.
- Follows program rules, YMCA policies and the YMCA Code of Conduct.
- Acts as a positive role model while implementing YMCA healthy living policies, character development and following the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
- Promotes YMCA programs, events and activities.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or related field preferred.
- Nationally accredited personal training certification (ex. ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA, etc.) required.
- 1-3 years experience personal training preferred.
- Strong knowledge of strength and conditioning principles, exercise physiology, anatomy and kinesiology.
- Requires ability to professionally and effectively communicate with members, staff and supervisors; maintain confidentiality and exchange accurate information.
- Requires ability to effectively interact with, lead, and motivate members who have a variety of abilities and needs.
- Possess or obtain within the indicated time frame the following certifications and keep all current:
- YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles required within 6 months of hire.
- YMCA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning within 6 months of hire.
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED certification upon hire.
- New Staff Orientation & Listen First required within 60 days of hire.
- Child Abuse Prevention and Blood Borne Pathogens training required within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to apply CPR as needed and respond to emergency situations.

GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTORS
**Immediate Openings Water Fitness Instructor**
East / Northeast / West
Under the supervision of the Health & Well-Being Director, the Group Fitness Instructor will provide safe, and motivating instruction with an emphasis on member engagement. This will be done in accordance with the mission, and general operating policies and procedures of the YMCA of Dane County, Inc.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides safe and fun instruction based on class descriptions and feedback; provides adaptations based on individual needs.
- Builds relationships with health seekers, staff and volunteers of all ages; focusing on engaging
- members as whole persons and providing a personalized member experience in a supportive, uplifting environment.
- Facilitates the development of small communities, helping members to connect with other members.
- Knows and understands Health & Well-Being programs, department policies, and emergency
- procedures; and is able to clearly explain said information to members.
- Keeps certifications current, attends in house trainings and meetings, and seeks out relevant trainings to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Becomes familiar with the basic class format designs and follows the appropriate format when teaching.
- Arrives 10 minutes prior to class start time prepared with a positive attitude, appropriate attire, music and needed equipment; sets-up, greets members and takes attendance.
- Works assigned shifts, arranging coverage if unable to work. All time off must be approved in advance by supervisor.
- Performs required safety, cleanliness and maintenance checks, takes the necessary precautions to prevent accidents, and reports any concerns to supervisor.
- Returns all equipment to its appropriate place; keeping storage areas clean and organized for easy access.
- Communicates clearly and professionally with supervisor, co-workers, and members as needed.
- Supports and participates in the Community Support Campaign; and promotes member participation.
- Follows program rules, YMCA policies and the YMCA Code of Conduct.
- Acts as a positive role model while implementing YMCA healthy living policies, character development and following the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
- Promotes YMCA programs, events and activities.
- Performs other tasks deemed necessary by the Health & Well-Being Director.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge of fitness program development, conditioning principles, and exercise physiology.
- Requires ability to professionally and effectively communicate with members, staff and supervisors; maintain confidentiality and exchange accurate information.
- Requires ability to effectively interact with, lead, and motivate members who have a variety of abilities and needs.
- Specialty certification and/or two years experience related to classes being taught is preferred.
- Flexibility in scheduling is preferred.
- Possess or obtain within the indicated time frame the following certifications and keep all certifications current:
- YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles required within 6 months of hire.
- YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise and any applicable specialty certifications (ex. Yoga, Pilates, Cardio/Step, Group Cycling) within 6 months of hire.
- CPR/AED certification upon hire.
- New Staff Orientation and Listen First required within 60 days of hire.
- Child Abuse Prevention and Blood Borne Pathogen training required within 30 days of hire.
