ADAPTIVE DEPARTMENT

 

ADAPTIVE SPORT COACH - EAST

Special Certifications or Requirements: Knowledge of basic rules, fundamentals and strategies of the sport coaching required. Knowledge of developmentally appropriate activities for individuals with disabilities preferred. Ability to work independently, seeking supervisory guidance as needed, using guidance provided constructively. Must be able to engage and motivate individuals with disabilities. Requires the ability to effectively communicate in a positive and professional manner with parents, children, members, supervisors and co-workers; maintain confidentiality and exchanging accurate information in all communications. Ability and willingness to work with individuals with diverse abilities and needs. Must complete child abuse prevention training within 30 days. Basic first aid training preferred. Must be enthusiastic about the specific sport being taught. Must enjoy working with individuals with disabilities. Must have patience with all individuals.

Volunteer Duties include, but are not limited to: Teaches the fundamentals, rules and strategies of a specific sport to individuals with disabilities. Creates team practice agendas; organizes and runs effective team practices. Obtains and organizes equipment needed for practice. Obtains Special Olympic Class A volunteer status and coach certifications. Attends Special Olympic meets and/or tournaments throughout the sport season. Arrives 10 minutes prior to class start time prepared with a positive attitude and appropriate attire; sets-up and greets participants. Works assigned shifts, arranging coverage if unable to volunteer.  Returns all equipment to its appropriate place; keeping storage areas clean and organized for easy access. Communicates clearly and professionally with children, supervisor, co-workers, and families as needed. Follows program rules, YMCA policies and the YMCA Code of Conduct. Acts as a positive role model for players and parents while implementing YMCA healthy living policies, character development and following the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Performs other tasks deemed necessary by the Adaptive Director.
