These activities are easy and effective exercises that require no training and can be done at your convenience any time of the day. Active living also provides us with experimenting with adventurous new activities. Challenge yourself to try a new experience every day. Ultimately, the addition of purposeful physical activity enhances your health, energy and happiness.

  10,000 Steps
The concept of walking 10,000 steps a day initially began in Japan in the 1980’s. The Japanese used step-meters called manpo-kei, which literally means ten-thousand steps meter. Additional scientific studies in the United States indicate that walking 10,000 steps per day (equivalent to approximately five miles depending on one’s stride) offers numerous health benefits. Step counting can be effectively monitored by using pedometers, which are used in this program. Pedometers offer instant feedback on your activity level, as well as provide the user with motivation for activity.
“Today’s children will live sicker and die sooner than their parents for the first time in modern American history.”
- Dr. S. Jay Olshansky, Longevity Researcher, University of Illinois at Chicago
